Variety of community education classes offered at Pine River-Backus – Pine and Lakes Echo Journal

PINE RIVER — Pine River-Backus Community Education offers the following upcoming classes. Register online at prbschools.revtrak.net or call 218-587-2080.

  • Medicare 101: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, in the PR-B FACS Room 49. Fee: $5.

Instructor Margo Jordan, from Humana, will teach the basics of Medicare and navigation of the Medicare maze. This class will be helpful for seniors turning 65 who want to learn how to get started. The class is also suitable for those who already have Medicare, but are confused by all the options.

This class will provide guidance and resources to find answers to additional questions.

  • Intro to Genealogy Research 1: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 26, in the Pine River-Backus High School Library. Fee: $20 for one class or $30 for both.

Pine River-Backus Technology Director Kevin Furst will teach this class for people to learn about their past, their ancestors and their culture. Genealogy is a great way to learn about your family history. Unfortunately, it can be a way to spend a lot of money.

This class will cover free tools students can use to research their family history, identify details and store/organize this information. Students can attend one or both classes; there will be time for questions.

  • Genealogy Research 2: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, in the Pine River-Backus High School Library. Fee: $20 for one class or $30 for both.

This class will uncover additional details and tools for family history research with a particular focus on common difficulties one might encounter. Class will cover methods and tools to help get unstuck and to help keep a project under control. Participants will discuss options for publication in print or web.

Students can attend one or both classes; there will be time for questions.

  • Internet Safety for Seniors: 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, in the Pine River-Backus High School Library. Fee: $20.

Instructor Kevin Furst will help identify scams that target seniors. Participants will learn ways to protect their information online and to spot scammers looking to steal personal information. Class will discuss free tools and approaches to help stay safe.

Participants will receive a handout with how-to’s to refer to later. Information is presented in a plain-speak format with the non-tech savvy in mind.
