SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Gardner-Webb’s Zack Byers wrapped up the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship on Friday afternoon at the Grayhawk Golf Club.
Byers (Shelby, N.C. / Shelby HS) shot a 78 in his opening round, settling down after a tough front nine. The 6-foot-2 senior shot even par on the back nine and finished his round with a pair of birdies. He shot par on the final six holes.
On a day that saw temperatures soar to 103 degrees with wind gusts as high as 22 mph during the round, Byers teed off at 4:45 eastern at the Grayhawk Golf Club along with 155 golfers to begin the 54-hole tournament.
Only seven golfers shot under par for the round, with Kansas’ Harry Hiller and Auburn’s Brendan Valdes leading the pack with 2-under par rounds of 68. Vanderbilt led the team scoring with a 282, three strokes in front of Oregon and Auburn,
The tournament is being contested on the 7,289-yard, par 70 Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club, designed by Tom Fazio.
