DURHAM – Former Duke men’s soccer forward Thorleifur Ulfarsson has been called up to compete with Iceland’s Under-21 National Team, ahead of its upcoming 2023 UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifying matches.
Ulfarsson will make his debut for Iceland, after opening his first professional season in Major League Soccer. Since being selected fourth overall by Houston Dynamo FC in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, Ulfarsson has played in 14 games with the club, scoring his first MLS goal on May 22 in a 3-0 win over LA Galaxy.
The Kopavogur, Iceland, native made his mark in his sophomore season at Duke, being named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches. Ulfarsson finished the year with 15 goals and 31 points in just 16 games.
Iceland’s U-21 squad has its next fixture scheduled for Friday, June 3, when it faces Liechtenstein at 1 p.m. ET, at Vikingsvöllur in Reykjavik, Iceland. The side has additional contests scheduled for June 8 against Belarus and Jun 11 against Cyprus.
