Understanding online narratives and health misinformation through visual language expression during emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic and the monkeypox outbreak

Thursday, 9 June 2022, 14:00–15:00 Geneva, 08:00–9:00 New York

During a public health emergency, understanding people’s information needs, concerns and narratives that are circulating in communities they are part of, is a foundation for evidence-based infodemic management. Using examples from COVID-19 and monkeypox,
experts from various regions and backgrounds will discuss how visual communication, e.g. emojis, images, videos, can help in assessing and addressing infodemics.

Panelists

Jamie Cohen, Assistant Professor, CUNY Queens College (10min pre-recorded opening remarks, will NOT join in person)

Claire Wardle, Professor of the Practice at Brown University/Co-founder of First Draft

Harry Sufehmi, Founder & Presidium, MAFINDO

Sergio Cecchini, Team Lead of the Africa Infodemic Response Alliance, hosted by WHO Regional Office for Africa

Farida Vis, Professor of Digital Media at Manchester Metropolitan University/Head of Manchester School of Art Research Centre (MSARC)

Q&A

Participants will be able to submit questions during the webinar by using Zoom’s “Q&A” feature. You may also submit them in advance by sending them to [email protected]
